The paper deals with the term “historical songs” and its use in early modern hymnographic sources. The Czech writer Šimon Lomnický (1552-1623) used the term to denote his songs dedicated to the lives of saints, but over time this concept expanded to an ever-increasing spectrum of texts. Paraphrases of biblical stories, secular songs with historical themes and song renditions of popular fiction were also described as historical.
